GibbsCAM Version
10 Rollout and High-Speed Machining Seminar
3DATUM hosted a GibbsCAM version 10 rollout combined
with a high-speed machining seminar at the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum and Park in Birmingham, Alabama
on November 8, 2011. Many of the new features and capabilities introduced in GibbsCAM version 10 were
discussed. Following the rollout was a presentation on high-speed machining, discussing the history of
high-speed machining as well as several of the more widely used strategies for high-speed machining with discussion
of their strengths and weaknesses and application. The day ended in the machine shop (the Haas Factory
Outlet) on the ground floor of the museum, where we machined full depth (1.0" deep) in 4140 steel with a .500"
diameter end mill (courtesy of Walter Tools) at 10,000rpm and 300 ipm, achieving excellent surface finishes, low
spindle loads, and superb tool life.
